$ 184.8

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Condition: There are no chips to the wood. There is one vertical crack on a clacker slat its entire length. We think that someone put a bit of glue in this crack quite some time ago. The surface shows age & dust & light dirt which gathered after that as there are only faint signs that this probably occurred. The crack is currently firmly together.

    Description

    Circa 1850's or so fire, police, watchman wood noise maker clacker. There is a large stamped maker's mark on the wood at the curved flat end section. But, the marking is faint. It appears to possibly say "P. D. Made". But, it may say more than that & we are not sure of anything that it says. We feel strongly that this is American. Also, there is currently listed on eBay in someone else's listing (not listed by us) an 1850's American daguerreotype showing a man holding a tool of this same or very similar type & quality. We asked that person's permission to refer their eBay listing number of the daguerreotype (which is 164269904740) in case someone might want to compare our item to the one in their daguerreotype &/or purchase our item as well as their item to make a fine duo.
    This is a very refined & beautifully made two clacker slat example. It measures 8 inches long by 6 7/8 inches from the top edge to the bottom of the handle & 1 3/4 inches thick. The piece weighs in at 11.3 ounces. This noise maker has a powerful visual appeal because of its very fine quality. There are no chips to the wood. There is one vertical crack on a clacker slat its entire length. We think that someone put a bit of glue in this crack quite some time ago. The surface shows age & dust & light dirt which gathered after that as there are only faint signs that this probably occurred. The crack is currently firmly together. The nicely turned handle has 21 parallel incised circles spaced at various distances apart.
    All of the wood has a lovely very rich & pleasing mellow patina gained from many years of age & use. This example has a very appealing construction feature. One curved end has a thick cast iron piece (as made) which is attached to the wood with five screws. This iron piece measures 3 7/16 inches by 2 11/16 inches. Quite a significant cast iron feature. This piece was really made to last! A marvelous design feature which certainly adds to its appeal. We have left this item exactly as found & have not dusted or cleaned it in any way. This fine noise maker was recently found in an estate sale in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
    Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value.
